New Park Reopens in New York to Help with Flooding
New York City has reopened part of East River Park in Manhattan. The park is part of a big plan to protect the city from flooding caused by storms and rising sea levels.
The new park is built up to 10 feet higher than before. It has sports courts, picnic areas, green lawns, and many new trees. There is also a hidden wall under the ground to help stop flood water.
Mayor Eric Adams said the park is a good example of how cities can stay safe and still be nice places to live. The city opened some parts last year, like ballfields and a new bridge at Delancey Street.
Many people who live near the park are in low-cost housing. The city wants to make sure everyone can enjoy the space and be protected from climate problems. More work on the park will continue until 2027.
